Is Original Art A Good Investment? - Leah Justyce Art Gallery

In this post about investing in one-of-a-kind original art I will be highlighting some valid points of information

Art is a long-term investment

Experts recommend art investment for patient investors with a time window of 10 years or more, so think long term. Many art investors include paintings in their estate planning as assets to pass on to their descendants

Original Art Goes Up In Value

The rarity of a work of art is what gives it value, so an original will always be worth more than a reproduction. While a giclée may come labeled with marketing ploys like "museum quality" or "archival" and the seller may hawk a certificate of authenticity, it will never be as valuable as an original.

Originals or one-of-a-kind works of art come with the highest price but the greatest potential payoff. Prints or copies are more affordable but less likely to turn a profit.

Not All Prints Are Bad Do Your Research Before Spending Your Money

Over the years terms have changed and prints in 2022 are very different from what a print was even 50 years ago. An artist whose business plan is to make small amounts of passive income would probably use print on demand stores. After all, it is very easy to do that these days. I have seen many sites where they use a famous artists paintings that are on the public domain and get them printed via print on demand stores and charge in the thousands for them.

Those businesses never see their product as they just created a website and signed up to Printful for example and the customer paid a lot of money for a worthless product. Truthfully, that customer could have spent 15 minutes on their computer and printed the same worthless image at Harvey Norman for next to nothing.

A litho print from Picasso however has value. Do your research! Even if you just want to have beautiful art in your home do not get caught up in the marketing hype pushed onto you for a sale of a mass produced product that has no value. It is not always about making money but be aware at least what your money is being spent on. There are too many scammy businesses out there that just abuse the systems and your needs.
