The Inspiration Behind the Practice
The inspiration for using repurposed fabric in my art came from a desire to contribute to the circular economy—a system where resources are reused and recycled, minimizing waste. Living in Ballarat, Victoria, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of textile waste on the environment. It’s an issue that many are unaware of, but one that has significant consequences for our planet. The Process of Upcycling Fabrics
Upcycling fabric begins with sourcing materials that have been discarded or donated, often through initiatives like Ballarat Textile Recycling, which I proudly began. Once I have the fabrics, the creative process truly begins. Each piece of fabric holds a story, a history that I seek to honor while giving it a new narrative through art. I often start by deconstructing the fabric, cutting it into shapes or stripping it down to its threads, depending on the vision I have in mind.
These elements are then layered, stitched, and sometimes even painted over, creating a rich tapestry of textures and colors that are unique to each artwork.
